The Provision of Funeral Service Arrangements (for Public Health Funerals)

Decision Maker: Executive Director: Growth and Regeneration

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

Bristol City Council has a statutory duty under the provisions of Section 46 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 to undertake the funeral of a deceased person, whose death has occurred with the boundary of Bristol City Council and where no other arrangements have been made or are about to be made. We are seeking to let a new Contract, under competition, for the provision of Funeral Service Arrangements for Public Health Funerals. The service provided to us by the winning contractor includes collection and storage of the deceased, provision of coffin and nameplate, Use of a hearse to transport the deceased to place of burial or cremation, doctors fee as set out by central government and the cost of minister attendance.

Decision:

Bristol City Council is awarding a contract to Funeral Services Ltd T/A Co-op Funeralcare following an open tender procedure, from 30 May 2025 to 29 May 2029.

Alternative options considered:

Option 1 - Other routes to market were considered but it was felt due to there being a small number of suppliers capable of carrying out the service required, the decision was made to opt for an open tender.
