Play in Bristol
Bristol City Council has decommissioned play services from April 2018 and is no longer providing any targeted support for 5-10 year-olds.
Bristol has a long and rich history of play and has previously been the envy of cities around the country for the quality of its services. Play is the way children learn about themselves and the world. It has positive effects on the brain and on a child's ability to learn.
Play helps children gain healthy emotional and physical development as well as their imagination, concentration, self-confidence and sociability skills. Cognitive, language and physical skills develop through play experiences preparing brains for the challenges of adulthood.
Whilst we understand that there is a need to cut budgets this decision is in complete contrast with the political rhetoric about early intervention and a child-friendly city. It will decrease the life chances of the most vulnerable children and impair the health and wellbeing of children as they grow up in our city.
