Re-open the Markdyke Steps

We the undersigned Want the Council to fix the collapsed wall which has closed the very popular route, known locally as the Mardyke Steps. This way takes pedestrians from Cliftonwood to the Hotwell Road. The closure of this way has a significant social consequence, as the elderly population who use this conduit are cut off from the Harbour and town. There is also an economic cost to the struggling small businesses on Hotwell Road which have lost all business from Cliftonwood residents. The loss of this way is significant and has endured for over a year.

The wall has collapsed and the cause seems to be linked to poor storm-flood management. For over a year, the way has been blocked while the Council tries to locate the owner and get agreement to pay a proportion of the repairs.

While we understand the pressures on council funds and do not want to waste tax-payers’ money, we believe that the risk of doing the repairs, while continuing to pursue the legal route is a reasonable risk.

We ask that the Council repairs the wall and then claims a proportion of the cost from the owner, if that is justified.
