Stop Redeveloping commercial areas into new homes
Redevelopment schemes are currently targeting areas in the centre
and Bedminster, both of which provide a substantial number of jobs
to the local community and risk Bristol based businesses closing
permanently.
The majority of these new residential constructs are likely to
be extremely tall high-rise buildings which will taint the local
skyline, but also mainly serve to supply more student
accommodation.
The student accommodation will fail to provide any income revenue
to the Bristol area, as all the money will largely go to the
corporations that run these large complexes. A better solution
would be to better regulate the current private student
lettings.
The houses that will be included in the developments will very
minimally assist the families that require the affordable housing.
This is because only a few of the houses will be deemed as
affordable, and the rest will further price out the rest of the
local Bristolians - further gentrifying the city centre.
The removal of businesses will only further cause the decline of
Bristol city centre and Bedminster while not addressing any of the
issues that Bristolians are facing. Instead, I propose that it
would be better for the council to step in and rejuvenate these
areas to better support the local businesses existing inside
them.
