No to the South Bristol Orbital Highway

We the undersigned Oppose the new road plan for a South Bristol Orbital Highway from Hicks Gate to Whitchurch Lane that will cause environmental damage, pollution and congestion. We believe such a road would be a waste of £133M of public money which should be directed into reducing congestion through the provision of better public transport. We call on the West of England Combined Authority, Bristol City Council and Bath & North East Somerset Council to drop these plans and remove them from the proposed joint local transport plan.

The South Bristol Orbital Highway is a new proposal by the local transport authorities. The proposed route was not consulted on in earlier public consultations on the regional spatial plan or the regional joint local plan.
The current proposal for the South Bristol Orbital Highway with supporting documents can be found here: http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/sites/default/files/south_east_bristol_whitchurch_oar.pdf

The report states that the cost of construction of the road, along with mass transit improvements, will be £133M. (page: Xvii of the OAR)

The road will direct an extra 1000+ cars an hour at peak travel times onto Whitchurch Lane which has a capacity of circa 1500 cars an hour which is already used by current traffic. (page: 6:15 OAR)

The South Bristol Orbital Highway is opposed by local councillors: Harriet Clough (Hengrove and Whitchurch Park), Steve Jones (Stockwood), Tim Kent (Hengrove and Whitchurch Park), Paul May (Publow & Whitchurch), Graham Morris (stockwood) as well as many residents, the Whitchurch Action Group, Whitchurch Parish Council and the Wrong Road Facebook Group.
