To ensure that the necessary financial and legal checks have been made and the relevant senior elected members and senior officers have given approval, as per the delegation set out in the DfT Active Travel Fund (ATF) Tranche 3 Cabinet paper (14th September 2021). Project details are as follows:
• In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the council accelerated its existing long-term transport ambitions to improve walking and cycling journeys while capacity on public transport was reduced, trialling measures with temporary materials under the Bristol Streetspace programme.
• Central Government’s “road map out of lockdown” accelerated projects, as there was a need to enable social distancing whilst supporting businesses throughout re-opening.
• The aims of the project are as follows:
o Making it easier and safer to walk and cycle in the area by providing more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
o Supporting local businesses to stay and thrive in the area by increasing the number of pedestrians.
o Improving the safety of traffic light junctions for all road users.
o Managing traffic flow and reduce pollution in the area.
o Encouraging people to take the bus, walk or cycle to key destinations such as the hospital and university.
